Technical Certifications: A Journey of Growth and Self-Improvement
I recently polled my network on how they felt about technical certifications, on whether they matter or not, or if they felt that sometimes they do.
Most of the “sometimes” camp were bang on. Themes such as " they matter when backed by relevant experience", or " some certs that are hands on vs multiple choice are better than others" I felt were bang on. I said I would share some of my thoughts on yes certs matter (or why not) once the poll closed. So here we go.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s crucial to keep up with the lates technical skills and knowledge. Technical certifications can helpindividuals to develop and grow their skills, giving them a deeperunderstanding of the technology they work with. But there’s a bigger picture here. Certifications can also represent a journey of growth and self-improvement.
Technical certifications are designed to cover the fundamentals of a specific technology, providing individuals with a strong foundation ofknowledge. By building upon this foundation with practical experience, professionals can expand their skillset and achieve mastery of theircraft. Certifications like the CNCF CKA, CKS, and CKAD are not just about passing a test, but also about being able to apply your knowledge to real-world situations. The process of gaining these certifications can represent a personal journey of growth, as individuals push themselves to expand their skills and knowledge.
Technical certifications can also signal a commitment to growth and self-improvement. Individuals who invest in their own growth and development by pursuing certifications demonstrate a dedication to their craft and a willingness to push themselves beyond their current limits. This dedication to personal growth is a trait that is highly valued by employers, making certified professionals more attractive to potential job opportunities.
In addition, certifications can represent a partnership between individuals and companies. Companies often invest in their employees by sponsoring certification programs and training courses. This investment shows that the company is committed to the growth and development of their workforce, and can help to foster a sense of partnership and shared goals between employees and their employers.
I want to be clear, I am not suggesting that a technical certification outweighs hands-on experience, or training in the absence of a certification, but I am saying that a technical certification, backed by relevant experience and related interests — I want to talk with that individual to see if there is alignment for a role.
In conclusion, technical certifications can be much more than just a validation of knowledge and skill. They can also represent a personal journey of growth and self-improvement, as well as a partnership between individuals and companies. By pursuing certifications and investing in personal growth, individuals can expand their skillset and improve their career prospects. So, if you’re looking to take your career to the next level, consider pursuing a technical certification and embarking on a journey of growth and self-improvement.
